Understanding the Impact FXS
System
components
The FX Series of digital communication systems consists of the following two
different equipment platforms—each designed for specific communication needs:
FXT System—This system is designed to best serve those installations sites that
require a telecommunications solution to their communications needs.
Impact FXS—This system is designed to best serve those installation sites that
require a computer/telephony interface (CTI) solution to their communications
needs. (That is, a personal computer (PC) combined with a telecommunications
package.)
Since the two platforms differ in their equipment configurations, they merit
separate documentation. The General Description that you are reading focuses on
the Impact FXS CTI platform.
The Impact FXS consists of two parts—the computer portion and the telephony
portion (you will find the computer portion documented in a separate publication
and not discussed here). In the telephony portion of the Impact FXS, the
equipment cabinet provides universal board slots that accept digital station
boards, industry-standard telephone station boards, and loop-start, T1, and other
special purpose line boards. In addition to the universal slots, the system has
dedicated slots for the central processor (CPU) board (or CPU card/services
board–if expanding the system capacity) and the auxiliary board.
The Impact FXS main cabinet provides a total of 96 universal ports that can
support multiple combinations of lines and stations; however, installers can add
up to two expansion cabinets to the FXS Series main cabinet that will, when fully
loaded, extend the total system capacity to 464 universal ports.
How the system
works
The Impact FXS provides cost-effective voice and data communications using the
latest PCM-TDM (pulse code modulated/time division multiplexing) digital
switching technology. The Impact FXS switching architecture provides a
non-blocking switching array that gives all ports simultaneous access through the
system. The digital technology allows simultaneous voice and data transmission
using 2B+D signaling (ITU-T) specification for basic access data transfer rate for
ISDN on a single twisted pair. The design is a fully modular, ISDN (integrated
services digital communications network) system with 256 usable time slots and
the flexibility for upgrade and expansion as needed. The Impact FXS supports the
listed Comdial line of digital proprietary telephones.
